Groveland Water and Sewer Department Shares Information on Upcoming Service Line Identification Project

GROVELAND — The Groveland Water and Sewer Department would like to share information regarding the upcoming Service Line Identification project.

The project is part of the Nationwide Service Line Identification program. The program is designed to identify all service line materials and remove any Lead or Galvanized service lines.

This phase of the project includes parts of Center Street, Washington Street, Salem Street, King Street, Rollins Street, Ashcroft Terrace, Balch Avenue, and Fairview Circle. Approximately 270 services will be identified during this phase.

To date, Groveland has not identified any Lead or Galvanized service lines. Our service lines are composed mostly of Copper and Plastic and, on rare occasions, steel pipe.

Letters were mailed on Oct. 30 to residents who are part of this project. Additionally, door hangers will be left on homes in advance to remind residents that the department will be approaching their property.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, Massachusetts Rural Water Association will have workers in Groveland to assist our staff with the many Dig-Safe mark-outs that are required. The Mass Rural Water Association (MassRWA) is a non-profit trade association of rural water and wastewater systems. They are a nationally recognized Rural Water Association and the preferred provider of training and on-site assistance for small systems in Massachusetts.

Excavations will begin on Nov. 9. Dig-Safe mark-outs have been taking place for a few weeks and will continue until all services have been identified. J&Z Excavation of Haverhill will be performing the excavation work; they will be utilizing mini-excavators and Hydro-Vac trucks.

The goal is to utilize the Hydro-Vac truck as much as possible. This is the least disruptive method, resulting in a roughly 2-foot diameter hole around the buried water shut-off. The contractor anticipates completing 12 to 20 properties per day utilizing the Hydro-Vac truck. Each day may present different obstacles; because of this, it is not feasible to project a day-to-day schedule of homes.

A crew will follow the Hydro-Vac truck and restore the excavation area to its original condition. Loam and grass seed will be spread in lawn areas.

All excavations that involve asphalt and/or any special conditions will be grouped and completed together. This will allow for a more methodical asphalt repair plan and will avoid leaving gravel patch work within sidewalks, roadway gutters, and/or driveways. The goal is to avoid disturbing any sensitive areas, plantings, patios, walkways, etc.

Groveland Water and Sewer would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding during this project. For additional questions, please contact the department at 978-556-7220.
