GROVELAND — The Groveland Water and Sewer Department would like to share that the department is moving to Phase 2 of the service line identification project.
As part of the nationwide Lead Service Line project, the department is required to identify the material used in each water service line.
During Phase One, the department compiled a historical records list and was able to positively identify the materials used in about half of the service lines within Groveland.
Phase Two of the project will involve “potholing,” where the department will be digging a small hole at the buried shut-off valve located in residential yards, in the coming weeks and months. This phase is to identify the additional unknown service lines within town. At this time, Groveland Water and Sewer has not found any lead or galvanized-steel service lines within the town.
Unknown service lines do not necessarily mean they are lead; however, it is considered a potential lead source until the department can confirm the actual material.
Homeowners may notice Groveland Water and Sewer crew members locating the shut-off valve in their yards and placing blue paint or a blue flag to mark the location for the excavation company.
The following streets that will kick off the work of Phase Two are: Center Street, Washington Street, Salem Street, King Street, Rollins Street, Ashcroft Terrace, Balch Avenue, and Fairview Circle.
No action is required from homeowners; however, residents should not remove any flags or paint applied by the department.
As part of the project, the contractor will dig the hole and identify the town-owned side of the service and the homeowners’ side of the service within the same hole. Each service line will be documented and photographed to ensure the service line composition.
The excavation area will be cleaned, loamed, and seeded. On some rare occasions, the shut-off is located within asphalt, which will be repaired upon completion.
As the department gets closer to the start of Phase Two, Groveland Water and Sewer will reach out directly to the affected homeowners with additional information.
